Bedtime (a w a k e n )

about

Bedtime calls for compassion, justice and interconnectedness in a time of disaster capitalism, climate catastrophe and settler-colonial oppression.

1. "Uncontrolled" is a jazz influenced composition by Jeremy Brown (he/him), featuring recorded audio excerpts of climate justice protests, including Fairy Creek Blockade

2. "Why Should We Care?" is a composition by jacqs walker (they/it/zey), that is based entirely on an interview with community leader & activist-Marion Ashton (she/her) of Sankofa YYC. The speech patterns, key centre and rhythmic language of Ms. Marion's interview were woven into a composition, and audio excerpts of her speech can be heard throughout (sankofayyc.org)

3. "Fly Like a Butterfly" is a composition from singer-songwriter, Wendy Walker (she/her). It is about surviving trauma, about that little light inside that says 'don't give up' and about healing and going on to 'live in a good way'

4. "Beautiful" is a meditation on love, interconnectedness and hope composed by Lo-Fi soul legend-Yolanda Sargeant (she/her), and includes elements of modern classical and neo-soul

5."Bedtime ( a w a k e n )"-is an invocation for compassion and the liberation of all beings. Musically, Bedtime is a deconstruction of improvised piano solos by Joanna Borromeo (she/her), combined with text from Tang Dynasty Chan poet- Chao Chou (Joshu, he/him), read by Speaking Percussionist-Nia Devetzis (she/her), with guest audio from Aadi Kumar and Kanishka Kumar

A Portion of the Proceeds of this album will be donated to Sankofa YYC
